CPG Industry Innovators: Nestlé Canada—A Commitment to Nutrition, Communities, and the Environment

Last August, Nestlé Canada released its 2021/2022 Creating Shared Value Snapshot, Our Purpose In Action, which highlighted the company’s commitment to creating positive social impacts through nutrition.

In his introduction, President and CEO John Carmichael wrote that Nestlé Canada “is focused on enabling healthier and happier lives for individuals and families, on helping develop thriving and resilient communities, and stewarding the planet’s natural resources for future generations.”

Through its Nestlé Cares Program, Nestlé Canada provided more than $3.6 million in product and monetary donations to communities and over $920,000 of support to local community groups and shelters.

Nestlé Canada also donated over $190,000 in monetary support and $500,000 in products to Food Banks Canada, its national partner. And in support of Food Bank Canada’s After the Bell Program, which provides healthy meals and snacks for children in schools, Nestlé Canada helped provide 150,000 child-friendly, healthy food packs in over 160 communities across the country.

To support efforts combating COVID-19 in 2021, Nestlé Canada:

  • Donated more than $230,000 of product to front line workers across 10 hospitals.
  • Donated product support to Project FoodChain, an organization that oversees seven shelters and 41 drop-in centres in Downtown Toronto.
  • Delivered 24 tonnes of food to 20 food banks and meal programs in support of United Way Hastings & Prince Edward County.
  • Provided more than $150k worth of hand sanitizer to local partners.
  • And more.

As the world’s biggest food and beverage company, Nestlé is working hard to be a global leader in helping protect the environment. Globally, Nestlé is committed to reducing its emissions by 20% by 2025 and 50% by 20230 and reaching net zero by 2050.

In Canada, Nestlé reduced factory waste by approximately 8% and water withdrawal by nearly 13% from 2020 to 2021, despite increasing production volume.

Nestlé Canada is a founding company and active partner of the Canada Plastics Pact (CPP) supporting the Golden Design Rules for Plastics Packaging, which drives higher industry standards to improve plastics recycling and reduce landfill and pollution.

Through these actions and commitments, Nestlé Canada has demonstrated its commitment to helping Canadians through nutrition, community support, and environmental stewardship.
