Canadian Retail Industry Innovator of the Month: Ocean Brands

This month we tip our hat at Ocean Brands (Ocean’s) as our Canadian Retail Innovator of the month.

Ocean’s is a Canadian business based out of Richmond, British Columbia with operations, acquisitions, and sales worldwide. Ocean’s manufactures environmentally friendly tuna and is a leader in Canada in their industry.

We chose Ocean’s because of their innovative approach to the environment-something that other brands should be paying attention to and embracing.

So why is Ocean’s Tuna truly environmentally friendly? Well, that has a lot to do with the standards that Ocean’s has set for their company and partners along with their actions and associations.

  1. Ocean’s mandates and requires use of responsible fishing methods.
  2. Ocean’s requires certification of dolphin-safe fishing practices from all tuna suppliers.
  3. Ocean’s partnered with the Global Ghost Gear initiative to contribute to solving the issue of “Ghost Gear” which is fishing gear that has been lost or abandoned in the ocean. You know when you see protected marine life tangled up in nets and line – that is usually the cause and Ocean’s is committed to finding solutions to the problem.
  4. Ocean’s is a plastic neutral company which means that for any plastic they put into the environment, an equivalent amount is removed through recycling and waste management efforts.
  5. Ocean’s has also formed partnerships with organizations to enhance their environmental efforts. A great example of this is Cleanhub and their collection partners. Through this organization Ocean’s has partnered with organizations like Triti Oasis and ecoBali -organizations on the front line working to champion waste management and recycling to get the plastic out of our environment.
  6. Ocean’s is B Corp Certified. What does that mean? B Corp leads a global movement that supports environmental, social and business goals working towards a sustainable and inclusive economy.

Those are some hefty innovations in favour of the environment.

Apart from being environmental and sustainability stewards, Ocean’s is committed to transparency. They have even gone as far as providing the public with access to a tool that helps them understand where their tuna comes from. This tool also provides information about sustainability and social responsibility along with what consumers should expect from tuna product manufacturers.

Companies like Ocean’s that not only benefit from the environment but seek to protect and improve it truly are the companies to be cherished. Innovations that seek to help the environment and improve sustainability should be recognized. Today we salute you, Ocean’s, for a job well done!
